JoSAA Counselling Guide
Freeze / Float / Slide Explained
These three actions decide whether you keep your seat, stay eligible for upgrades, or risk losing allotment. Use this page before every round decision.
Keep this seat and stop upgrades
Use when you are fully satisfied and want to exit further upgrade movement.
Keep seat, allow higher preferences
Stay in process for any higher-ranked choice in later rounds (institute can change).
Keep institute, upgrade branch only
Stay in same institute and consider higher preferred programs there, where applicable.
What each action means
Choose action based on intent, not guesswork.
Critical JoSAA traps
- If Preference #1 is allotted, only Freeze is allowed. Not accepting it can cancel that seat.
- If you Float/Slide and later reject the upgraded seat, you can lose all seats.
- Missing seat acceptance fee deadline can cancel your seat and this is generally irreversible.
- For NIT+ allotments, PAF after the final round is mandatory to retain seat.
3 hard scenarios (with outcomes)
The most common validation failure
Wrong State of Eligibility selection breaks Home State quota logic for NIT+ and can fail at document verification.
If Class XII first appearance was in Delhi but current residence is Noida, State of Eligibility is Delhi.
Before choosing Freeze/Float/Slide
- Recheck your next higher preferences and whether you truly want movement.
- Read current round deadline for fee payment and reporting action.
- Confirm state/category/gender pool tags in your shortlisted options.
- Take a screenshot/PDF of your action confirmation for records.
Printable checklist: use browser print (Ctrl/Cmd + P) before submitting willingness.
Documents you must keep ready
- JEE scorecard + admit details used in JoSAA registration
- Category/PwD certificates (if claimed) in current-year valid format
- Class XII marksheet + State of Eligibility proof basis
- ID proof + fee payment receipts + willingness confirmation screenshot
